Traditional Okinawan karate in a women-only environment. Practical self-defense. Real skills. A community that shows up for each other. No prior experience. No sparring. No long-term contract.

Our women's program draws students from their teens through their 60s and beyond — women who wanted real self-defense skills, not a watered-down fitness class. Many arrive with no martial arts background. Some come with daughters. A few come after a moment that made them realize they wanted to feel capable and regain their power in the world.
You don't need to be fit. You don't need to be young. You need to be willing to show up.

Our women's program follows the same traditional Okinawan karate curriculum as our adult program — the same techniques, the same depth, the same standard. The difference is the environment: women-only classes, taught by women, designed around the realities of women's lives.
Every class builds on:

Classes run approximately 60–75 minutes on weekday evenings. There is no sparring. You'll practice applications with a partner in a controlled, safe environment. Newer students are always paired with experienced ones.
The group is intentionally small. You will not get lost in a crowd.
Teens are welcome to train on their own or alongside their mothers in our women's classes. This is a meaningful way for mothers and daughters to build shared skills and spend real time together.

Virginia Dojo's women's program is taught by Denise Coursey, 4th Dan and Yelena Novopachennaia, 2nd Dan, trained in the Beikoku Shidokan Karatedo Association lineage — the same lineage as our adult program, founded by Grand Master Seikichi Iha, 10th dan.
The program was developed in collaboration with Hanshi Roberto Curtis, 9th dan, who has trained in the martial arts for over 50 years.

Our women's students range from teens to women in their 70s and beyond. If you're an older woman wondering whether this is for you — it is. Several of our most dedicated students started in their 50s, 60s and 70s with no prior experience. Our program meets you where you are.
